About The Project

“On The Rocks” is a vibrant magazine dedicated to the exhilarating world of mountain biking, skiing, and rock climbing in Colorado. The goal with this magazine was to capture the pulse of these dynamic sports, the majesty of nature, and the spirit of the people that breathe life into these adventures. Each issue of this magazine is crafted with a deep appreciation for the rugged beauty of Colorado’s landscapes and the bold individuals who navigate them.

The primary objective of “On the Rocks” magazine was to set it apart from other outdoor sports publications that adopt a bolder design style and emphasize the professional athlete and newest equipment aspects of these sports. Unlike magazines such as Dirt, Enduro, and Mountain Bike Action, “On the Rocks” sought to cultivate an inclusive aesthetic, aiming to resonate with the everyday weekend adventurer looking to find the best places in Colorado to partake in the sports they love.

This was accomplished by designing a playful and illustrative logo/masthead, which mirrors the jagged contours of Colorado’s stunning rock formations. It also reflects the tire and ski tracks left behind by each and every mountain biker and skier speeding through Colorado’s hills. This illustrative approach is complemented by vibrant and captivating illustrations that convey the essence of each article’s topic and or sport, alongside photography that offers a more authentic portrayal of each sport’s performance.

“On The Rocks” is a design committed to showcasing not just the thrill of the ride or the climb but also the stories of camaraderie and local culture that strengthen the outdoor community. Through breathtaking photography, illustration, and in-depth articles, this magazine offers readers a down to a down to earth window into the soul of outdoor sports in Colorado. A place where nature’s challenges are met with human grit and where every trail, slope, and climb is an opportunity to discover, connect, and grow.
